Lessons in governance excellence

Brian Janice Chris

We just completed one of the most productive CMA Board retreats in many years. We have an engaged and highly-functioning board that is doing great work for Canada’s doctors and our patients. Here are two of the main reasons for our success: CMA Board Chair Dr. Brian Brodie and Munk School of Global Affairs Director Janice Stein.

Brian has taken his role as Chair very seriously and brings a wealth of experience, governance training, and good, old-fashioned fairness to the role. He is universally respected by Board members and CMA staff and consistently sets the tone for productive and constructive dialogue.

Janice has been providing longitudinal mentorship for us all by bringing her expertise in governance excellence. A compelling leader with unique insights into how Boards can rise to achieve great things, she has provided workshops and ongoing guidance and evaluation for us all.

A great learning experience for me. I don’t think I truly appreciated how crucial good governance is until I saw it in action.
